Vulnerability, a Strength

"Vulnerability is the greatest strength a person can have. You can't experience life without feeling life. Being vulnerable to somebody you love is not a weakness, it's a strength. Sadness, joy, love, wonder--all feelings--come from a place of grounded strength that comes from trust in yourself.
We spend so much time trying to control our feelings out of fear that something may happen, that somebody may not love us, or walk away or die. It's only when you stop living in that fear of what other people might do to you or how they will react, only then are you free to be alive."

'vulnerability is the greatest strength'! mr. morton would like us to believe that weakness is the greatest strength. riiight.

no matter how one spins it being weak and susceptible to attack is never in itself a strength. a person already in a position of strength, however, might be able to choose vulnerability in order to gain trust and further benefits.

in this sense a position of strength is correlated with vulnerability. putting oneself in a position of vulnerability is an indicator of this persons sense of strength. however, vulnerability is not strength.

one does not have to look far to find examples of individuals who adopted vulnerability from a position of weakness and were destroyed in the process.

perhaps by vulnerable the author means 'sensitive'. being sensitive to others is certainly a skill that can propel us to a position of strength.

It takes a lot for one to expose ones sensitive side to someone. Its like giving the secret key to someone to something that can completely mess you up. When you do that i think you make yourself vulnerable. Its true that not everyone is sensitive/kind enough to act benevolent to your sensitive side. Therefore, i think, "being sensitive" is what the author is talking about here ... that sometimes with some people you have to overcome the fear of being hurt and take the risk ... especially when it comes to the ones you love.

A person who fears it, takes it as a weakness and Mr Morton here is trying to tell us that its not very sensible of us to think of it as a weakness ... that more than vulnerability its the fear of it that makes us weak and that its when we think we'll fall weak is when we actually fall weak!

hmmm.
i don't think fear of vulnerability makes us any weaker than we already are.

it prevents us from forming bonds of friendship and trust that can further strengthen us. but it also protects us against attacked from close quarters. so it maintains a status quo.

i concede that a position of vulnerability is not itself a weakness. by the same token, neither is it a strength.

however, allowing others to continually exploit your vulnerability is definitely a weakness.

i agree but bounding yourself continiously just because of the fear of it is a weakness too :)
