Does this show male dominance/aggressiveness? Woman is too ornamented whereas the man isn't conscious of his appearance. Woman seems too submissive whereas the man is too aggressive, showing his passion. And this does not depicts a two-sided Love as if something is missing !!!
True! Something is missing in this pic...something very important is missing.....may be girls' will, may be boys TRUE love, aaa whatever...pic actually is not giving the effect what it shud...besides it is splendidly painted.....
Here's the thing Sak... I'm a cynic, to me the painting represents male dominance, chauvinism, etc.etc. Why? Well, the guy has grabbed the girl and planted one on her, and she's indifferent if anything and seems a bit forced...
There can be much darker meanings that go further than that, but I'm in a happy mood today, so will leave it at that!
may be i am being completely insensitive but i really think these two are just old-fashioned.
the woman does not seem to be displeased. she is most certainly not resisting. rather she has her right arm intimately wrapped around the guy and with her left hand she is simply guiding the man, if anything.
you can tell by the way she tilts her head, the closed eyes, the absence of clenched fists that she is very relaxed, calm, at peace, even to the extent of being submissive.
it appears to me the woman is quite content in being this way. isn't it a bit arrogant to demand that she should be more involved?
also if you notice the encounter is taking place on what appears to be the edge of a flowery cliff. it is, in my appreciation, simply an old-fashioned tryst.
notice the pattern on the guy's dress is full of patches with right angles, black and browns. this pattern probably confers on the man a 'rigid' and 'sharp' personality even though we cannot see his facial expression.
by contrast, the woman is wearing a dress that is patterned almost exclusively in brightly colored circles and spirals...
@Khany ... this is what I missed in the painting. And off course this is the MEANING :)
Very nice understanding of emotions. I was really confused on my comments. Seriously, i was thinking about what I missed. The only word that came to my mind after wards was "SUBMISSION". And after your comment, i think there is no need to mention it.
Lets wait for SAK now :) here you go MASTER OOGWAY ;)
What a great work, its nice to see others enjoying and discussing it now as much as ever before. I went to the Tate exhibition in Liverpool last year and feel privileged to understand his work more now.
